Here's a list of 10 tools that every gardener should have
(multiples of some, like shovels and watering cans, are a good
idea):
- Trowel
A well-made trowel is your most important tool. Every gardener
should have one.
- Hand Fork
A hand fork helps chop up clumps, work amendments into the soil,
and is a necessary tool for cultivating in closely-planted
beds.
- Hoe
A long-handled hoe is a gardener's best friend. This tool is great
for keeping weeds at bay.
- Hand pruners
Invest in a pair of quality pruners. It'll make your life easier
when trimming back larger plants.
- Watering Can
Try to find a watering can that creates a gentle and even stream of
water that won't wash seedlings or sprouting seeds out of their
soil.
- Fork
You can't dig and divide perennials without a heavy-duty fork (and
some dividing methods even suggest you own two!).
- Shovel
The sharper the better.
- Wheelbarrow
They come in all different sizes, and are indispensable for hauling
soil, compost, plants, mulch, hoses, tools... everything you'll
need to garden.
- Gloves
Leather gloves hold up best. If you have roses, get a pair that
resist thorn pricks.
- Hose
The fastest way to transport lots of water from your water source
to your garden.
