Set Your Goals

An important first step to planning your garden is setting your goals, writing them down, and posting them somewhere everyone can see them. Setting some "ground rules" or a "code of behavior" will also help keep everyone on track, and serve as a reminder of the core objectives of your garden.

Here are some things you'll want to consider when creating your objectives:

  • A name for your garden - possibly a task for one of the children!
  • Purpose of your garden - an easy way to eliminate misunderstandings and keep all the community members united.
  • How to get involved - as your community grows, you'll want an easy way to include new members while maintaining your group structure.
  • Source and use of funds - who can purchase supplies, where, and any division of costs.
  • Rules for harvesting - how and when things can be picked and how to divide the produce among community members.

Once you've set the goals and rules, create a sign or write them down and post them somewhere near the garden.

Make This a Team Activity

Include your team in setting up your objectives so everyone has ownership in the objectives.

Like everything else in this guide, remember to have fun with it!
